What might be called a small revolution in portable recording, "Videoconfidence" (a registered JVC trademark) refers to the ability to watch a scene off the tape as it is actually being recorded. This is accomplished by two separate video heads which scan the tape just after the video recording heads. When connected to any JVC 3-tube camera, instantaneous monitoring of the recorded signal through the viewfinder is possible whenever the RETURN VIDEO button on the lens is pressed. No more guessing whether or not the tape is actually being recorded! There are several other advantages associated with Videoconfidence heads. A "head clog" warning is provided on the deck. If one or both of the recording heads clogs (or if for some other reason the FM carrier is lost during recording) the CR4900U will sound an audible alarm in the audio monitor, and a front panel LED will light. In addition, instantaneous monitoring of the playback carrier permits the fine tuning of the recording current. With this facility, the VCR can be "tweaked" for optimum performance, regardless of the type of tape being used. SMPTE Time Code

Built into the CR4900U is a third audio channel for recording SMPTE time code. SMPTE time code is an 80 bit serial address code which is used to identify each frame of video on the tape. Once SMPTE code is recorded on the tape, individual frames and locations can be accessed directly with time code editing systems, such as the VE-93 editing system. Recording the SMPTE address code requires the optional TGP47U time code generator. It plugs into a multi-pin connector on the side of the VCR. Microprocessor control

Besides feather touch operation, the microprocessor control circuit reduces the overall weight of the CR4900U (19.6 lbs with battery & cassette) and permits remote control operation. With the optional RMP47U, the tape transport functions can be remotely controlled, and tape locations viewed with a 4 digit LCD. Low Power Consumption

Power consumption by the CR4900U is held to a low 12 watts while in the record mode (15 watts while using Videoconfidence). Backspace editing, Frame Servo

Whenever the recorder enters the pause mode during recording, the tape is backspaced. When recording is again resumed, the frame servo system assures a clean edit. Visual picture search

In playback, the picture can be seen with the tape running at about 10 times normal speed in both forward and reverse reverse. External Sync and Subcarrier inputs

Sync and SC inputs are provided for connection to a wide variety of peripheral equipment. Safety tabs are provided on the INT/ EXT switches to prevent accidental misadjustment. Meters

Two audio level meters are provided for easy adjustment of audio recording levels. (An audio limiter circuit is also provided for automatic adjustment.) The audio CH1 meter also monitors the FM carrier current in the playback mode if so desired. Battery status is provided by a front panel battery meter. Warning indications.

Numerous warning indications are provided to the operator. These include tape-end warning, battery, head clog, servo and others. When a warning condition is detected, an audible alarm sounds in the audio monitor. Balanced Audio

Audio inputs and outputs on the CR-4900U are balanced and use XLR connectors. Audio inputs are switchable between mic level and line level. Monitoring is provided through a 1/4" phone jack.
